KCRW+ OM PRESENTS:
JOSE JAMES (LIVE) + QUADRON (DJ SET + LIVE VOCALS)
William Holland The dood who brought you Quantic, The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Quantic y Su Combo Barbaro is back at it with the some of freshest sounds on planet with a new project -> Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno.
“With the Flowering Inferno, Will ‘Quantic’ Holland brings dub and reggae flavours to the Latin American and African sounds that he has been chasing round the globe since he first started collecting records. He introduced this project to the world with 2008’s stunning and highly acclaimed Death Of The Revolution , and considers this follow-up album a more cohesive whole – a deeper and more intrinsic fusion of these varying musical strands. An album inspired by soundsystem culture but widened out far beyond just reggae and dancehall styles Dog With A Rope is a Tropical soundclash - encompassing a heavy bass and reggae aesthetic alongside the Tropical dance-orientated music from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Colombia. While lots of DJs are currently playing both classic and obscure old reggae, funk and Cumbia, Holland noted that not many people are currently making new music of this type and building on these styles in a modern way, so with his signature combination of faith in the past and hunger to push forward, with this album he strove to make the connection. He recorded the album in his Sonido Del Valle studio in Cali, Colombia, the city he has called home since his relocation in 2007.
As well as the straight up reverb reggae of the lush, instrumental title track, the “Dog With A Rope” single also brings you “Dog With A Rope (Dub)”, a killer deep dub version exclusive to this single. You can also feast your ears on “Dub Y Guaguanco”, a steadily building mix of reggae piano stylings from Alfredito Linares and the Colombian rhythm Guaguanco, with a vocal coro from Colombian singers Orlando and Virgilio Hurtado (who also provided the vocals to “Mambo Los Quantic” on Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro’s highly lauded ‘Tradition In Transition’ LP, trivia fans).” -Jazz
Listen to the wonderful interview by Jeremy Sole on KCRW, as him and Quantic rap about the recording process, growing up in the UK, commonalities between Latin and Reggae music, and how this new record has married the two styles. CLICK HERE.
The “Dog On A Rope” single drops June 8 on with the full Dog On A Rope album releasing July 13 on the world-renowned Tru Thoughts imprint. Enjoy a couple previews from the new album below :)

The New Zealand-based Electric Wire Hustle recently made their U.S. debut in Los Angeles. There was no doubt that they would be amazing live and I’m very excited to report that they absolutely demolished any and every expectation I had. The show was electric, funky and just an old fashioned good time.
Getting things started off properly Taylor Mcferrin and an amazing drummer he brought along set it off with some rad beatboxing/Rhodes keys/drum breaks and experimental glory. Immediately after Mr. Mcferrin, Master Blazter (Dam Funk, J1 THE DEER & Computer Jay) proceeded to serve up the funk on a gold platter with some of the best LA energy ever getting everyone nice and hyped up for Electric Wire Hustle.
Prior to EWH’s set, I was able to step outside with them and get to know the trio a bit better. Watch below as they share their vast influences, views on public policy, what they look forward to, who they’d like to collaborate with, and Mara TK’s cooking specialties!
Super special thank you’s to Aaron Byrd and Hayley Digwall for coordination and support, Anthony Valadez for the use of his camera when both of my recording devices failed, Aaron Gleen from BeatsNcrates for filming and SefDiggy & Greg The Dude for their super sweet expert assistance in post-production. Much love to all who were in attendance and to those who have supported amazing, quality through their creative endeavors. -J. Marie
The Bay Area’s The Park rules. They’ve been teasing us with a track here and track there leading up to this amazing project The Process which they finally layed on us yesterday. The Process is the perfect combination of soul, funk, rock and roll guitar and glorious melody. Support fabulous music here.
Also have a look-see at this session of The Park recorded by the unicorn-loving Anthony Valadez.
José James has masterfully combined jazz, hip hop, soul and freestyle elements into his music, has propelled some of the most epic musical projects of the past few years and is poised to elevate genre-blending consciousness for many years to come. From covering Coltrane’s “Equinox” - which got the attention of worldwide musical tastemaker Gilles Peterson who later put out his first album, to re-inventing Freestyle Fellowship’s “Park Bench People” José James has carved a very special and much needed niche into musical culture worldwide.
Prior to José’s recent Los Angeles show, we had the distinct pleasure of speaking with him to touch base and get a more in-depth look at how he’s gotten to where he is, what this next steps will be and who he’s collaborating with musically, spiritually and wholeheartedly to get there. We rapped about his Panamanian percussive influence from his father, tried to pinpoint why experimental music is more abundant overseas as well as where he’s had some of his most memorable shows.
Watch out for José James + Taylor McFerrin in Jan 2012 with a Japan tour slated and then up next, José’s new album - set to drop in early 2012.
It was a pleasure and honor to chat with José and we are deeply grateful for his music and many infinite blessings he’s shared with us.
