Long time Los Angeles mover and shaker, DJ Destroyer, has been busy uniting people through music on the dancefloor, via his own vinyl releases, forward-thinking events + overall collective effort put forth into this universe.  As the originator of the 3+ year strong running Strictly Social event along with co-founder Nu-Soul Magazine, Norman Mayers, the two have been busy coordinating, hustling and curating the best of what happens when you combine soul & RnB LIVE with electronica.

Belleruche | Turntable Soul

Any group that can be referred to as purveyors of fine “turntable soul” we are down with, no questions asked.  Belleruche, the Hackney (near London) based band is about to drop 270 Stories on Oct 12 courtesy of Tru Thoughts and here is a lovely mix showcasing some gems from the trio.  Carefully crafted and mixed and by KCRW’s own Anthony Valadez, this little ditty takes you on a soulful journey through hip hop, soul, blues, dance music and beyond.  Float on…..

Soundwaves | Minty Selections

A couple weeks ago I was invited as a guest to the Soundwaves radio show on KPFK FM in Los Angeles.  Little did I know the 12am-2am show was going to be some of the most fun I’ve had in months (aside from the Electric Wire Hustle show a few days before:) ).  The show’s creator, Abraham Beltran, and his lovely co-hosts Ms. Cecilia and DJ Seano a.k.a. The Lord of Lounge were absolutely wonderful hosts and really  down to earth music lovers.    

The show started off with one of the most talented guitarists I’ve ever heard, 19-year old Kris Escajeda with a really nice acoustic set.  He brought along Ms. Eddicka Organista (El-Haru Kuroi) who sang a lovely lullaby.  They were amazing!  Really, truly talented.

The Soundwaves crew let me take over the spaceship for a bit where I was able to play some dope joints - some new, some old!  Towards the end of our journey Abraham interviewed Junior from Recordbreakin, delving into the past, present and future for the Philadelphia-based label. 

All in all, it was a wonderful experience to share the airwaves with these amazingly talented and genuine people.  Check the technique from episode #101 and stay tuned every Saturday for Soundwaves on www.kpfk.org or 90.3FM in Los Angeles area. -J Marie

Interview | Electric Wire Hustle

The New Zealand-based Electric Wire Hustle recently made their U.S. debut in Los Angeles.  There was no doubt that they would be amazing live and I’m very excited to report that they absolutely demolished any and every expectation I had.  The show was electric, funky and just an old fashioned good time.

Getting things started off properly Taylor Mcferrin and an amazing drummer he brought along set it off with some rad beatboxing/Rhodes keys/drum breaks and experimental glory.  Immediately after Mr. Mcferrin, Master Blazter (Dam Funk, J1 THE DEER & Computer Jay) proceeded to serve up the funk on a gold platter with some of the best LA energy ever getting everyone nice and hyped up for Electric Wire Hustle.

Prior to EWH’s set, I was able to step outside with them and get to know the trio a bit better.  Watch below as they share their vast influences, views on public policy, what they look forward to, who they’d like to collaborate with, and Mara TK’s cooking specialties!

José James Interview

José James has masterfully combined jazz, hip hop, soul and freestyle elements into his music, has propelled some of the most epic musical projects of the past few years and is poised to elevate genre-blending consciousness for many years to come. From covering Coltrane’s “Equinox” - which got the attention of worldwide musical tastemaker Gilles Peterson who later put out his first album, to re-inventing Freestyle Fellowship’s “Park Bench People” José James has carved a very special and much needed niche into musical culture worldwide.

Prior to José’s recent Los Angeles show, we had the distinct pleasure of speaking with him to touch base and get a more in-depth look at how he’s gotten to where he is, what this next steps will be and who he’s collaborating with musically, spiritually and wholeheartedly to get there. We rapped about his Panamanian percussive influence from his father, tried to pinpoint why experimental music is more abundant overseas as well as where he’s had some of his most memorable shows.

Watch out for José James + Taylor McFerrin in Jan 2012 with a Japan tour slated and then up next, José’s new album - set to drop in early 2012.

It was a pleasure and honor to chat with José and we are deeply grateful for his music and many infinite blessings he’s shared with us.

EWH, hailing all the way from new Zealand, has been been around sine 2007 and last year they came to tour the U.S. for the first time and we had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing them. Not only are they amazing artists with a super unique sound, but they are also hilarious and super sharp gentleman.
