DJ Seano - A Smokey Collection

We introduced you to DJ Seano before, and now he is back with one of the sickest mixes of the year, A Smokey Collection of jazz funkayness, breaks and soul.  With a super versatile sound, Seano has been making waves just below the radar enough to stay fly whilst sharing the stage with folks like Cypress Hill, Peanut Butter Wolf, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Houseshoes, Rhettmatic, Velvet Revolver and Rich Medina to name a few.

This mix is a result of homies + smokey room + epic track selection.  Enjoy and download below if ya likey.

Soundwaves | Minty Selections

A couple weeks ago I was invited as a guest to the Soundwaves radio show on KPFK FM in Los Angeles.  Little did I know the 12am-2am show was going to be some of the most fun I’ve had in months (aside from the Electric Wire Hustle show a few days before:) ).  The show’s creator, Abraham Beltran, and his lovely co-hosts Ms. Cecilia and DJ Seano a.k.a. The Lord of Lounge were absolutely wonderful hosts and really  down to earth music lovers.

The show started off with one of the most talented guitarists I’ve ever heard, 19-year old Kris Escajeda with a really nice acoustic set.  He brought along Ms. Eddicka Organista (El-Haru Kuroi) who sang a lovely lullaby.  They were amazing!  Really, truly talented.

The Soundwaves crew let me take over the spaceship for a bit where I was able to play some dope joints - some new, some old!  Towards the end of our journey Abraham interviewed Junior from Recordbreakin, delving into the past, present and future for the Philadelphia-based label.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience to share the airwaves with these amazingly talented and genuine people.  Check the technique from episode #101 and stay tuned every Saturday for Soundwaves on www.kpfk.org or 90.3FM in Los Angeles area. -J Marie

Vinia Mojica Tribute

Artwork: Darrell Alonzi

Have you heard of Vinia Mojica?  If you think not, it might be true that you don’t know her name - but I bet you know her voice.  This Bronx native has been on the hip hop scene since 1989 first working the Jungle Brothers and since then has collaborated with Common, Mos Def, Native Tongues, Mary J, Ge-ology, Hi-Tek, Jneiro Jarel and many more.  To pay homage to this amazing vocalist who until this day doesn’t have a full body of work released we put a mixtape together.  We’ve compiled some of Vinia’s stand-out tracks and enlisted the help of our Los Angeles minty fam, DJ Seano for the blending and mixdown skills.  We are proud to present a tribute to the lovely and talented Ms. Vinia Mojica.  Download the full mix here, stream below and please feel free to share with anyone you think might enjoy.
