A couple months back we posted a bit on Gilles Peterson’s latest Cuban musical collab, Havana Cultura. The remixes are ready for this project and they rule! Set to release June 7 on Brownswood, these Havana Cultura remixes are all the way live! Listen for yourself and enjoy :)
A few weeks ago we posted the preview promo for this new Brownswood series - as the time gets closer we have found some individual tracks surface. Standing up for a new wave of artists struggling to elbow their way into the limelight, ‘Brownswood Electr*c’ weaves a path through the electronic landscape in 2010, representing the rainbow spectrum of electronic goodness purveyed by Brownswood’s figurehead Gilles Peterson in his radio playlists and DJ sets. The boundaries between so-called “hip-hop”, “house”, “techno”, “dubstep” and “drum & bass” have never been so blurred, often rendering these signifiers practically obsolete, and indeed it’s at these crossings, junctions and awkward intersections where the most inspiring and stirring sound clashes occur. Really realllllly looking forward to this release. June 28, 2010.

Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival is back in Singapore on the 27th and 28th of August 2010 for two WF sessions of cutting edge grooves by the best of today’s inspired artists. Here is a gift we found from one of our fav dj’s, Lefto, serving as a preview of what’s to come at this installation of the WF. IT’S DOPE and “should be played at high volume, preferably in a residential area!”
This has got to be one of the most beautiful compositions I have heard in a long time. UK-Based Submotion Orchestra, the 7 member group that Gilles Peterson is calling “somewhere in between Cinematic Orchestra and dubstep” is shining so brightly. With lush vocals from Ruby Wood and tantalizing layers of trumpet, deep bass, and keys from a series of other talented musicians this group is really poised to carve a new niche into soulful music. This is love music. That is all.
Gilles Peterson’s famed Brownswood label is back with a second installation of their amazing Brownswood Electr*c series. Known for showcasing and giving visibility to virtually unheard of talent this label has really done an amazing job curating sounds worldwide. Brownswood Electr*c 2 features 14 producers spanning 5 different continents (UK, USA, Germany, Australia, Japan) and was compiled by Brownswood Recording’s own Alex Stevenson. Check a sneak peak + tracklist of the up and coming Brownswood electr*c 2 project out in late June (UK & US).

José James has masterfully combined jazz, hip hop, soul and freestyle elements into his music, has propelled some of the most epic musical projects of the past few years and is poised to elevate genre-blending consciousness for many years to come. From covering Coltrane’s “Equinox”- which got the attention of worldwide musical tastemaker Gilles Peterson who later put out his first album, to re-inventing Freestyle Fellowship’s “Park Bench People”José James has carved a very special and much needed niche into musical culture worldwide.
Prior to José’s recent Los Angeles show, we had the distinct pleasure of speaking with him to touch base and get a more in-depth look at how he’s gotten to where he is, what this next steps will be and who he’s collaborating with musically, spiritually and wholeheartedly to get there. We rapped about his Panamanian percussive influence from his father, tried to pinpoint why experimental music is more abundant overseas as well as where he’s had some of his most memorable shows.
Watch out for José James + Taylor McFerrin in Jan 2012 with a Japan tour slated and then up next, José’s new album - set to drop in early 2012.
It was a pleasure and honor to chat with José and we are deeply grateful for his music and many infinite blessings he’s shared with us.
Preview Minty posts on José here, here, here and here. Yeah, we ♥ him.
