spinnerty - making babies III

“Picture this: a Midwestern kid getting shuttled around to soccer practice in the back seat of his parent’s car listening to The Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen and Phil Collins - doesn’t bring to mind a future jazz, soul, hip-hop head, now does it? But somehow, in the case of DJ Spinnerty, one musical vision led to the next” -FULL BIO

Collaborating on productions with artists like Joy Jones, Rep Life, Miles Bonny and then some this dood Spinnerty is back at it with a third installation of his infamous Making Babies mixtape series.  Just in time for Valentine’s BUT a good mix for anytime.

“As always, I’ll add this disclaimer: Use With Caution.  No joke, babies have been made while listening to the mix.  With that said, this is the soundtrack for turning the lights down low.” -Spinnerty

Spinnerty | Just Listen 1&2

In 2008 Record Breakin’ Music released the highly sought after, limited edition 7” by Spinnerty with the underground hip hop track “Foundation Pt. 2 (ft. Replife) and the futuristic soul gem “Time to Cut (ft. Miles Bonny)”.

Today RBM is excited to release Spinnerty’s latest production, Just Listen Pt. 1 & 2. Like his first release, Spinnerty has a wonderful balance of hip hop, soul and futuristic elements into this approach. “Just Listen Pt. 1” features the hard working, prolific emceeing talents of John Robinson aka Lil’ Sci. On the B side, “Just Listen Pt. 2” introduces that melodic styling of newcomer Jacqueline Marie, with additional production from the gifted K15.

“The Just Listen project leaves me feeling like a proud dad. Bringing together musical friends of mine to create a project bigger than the sum of its parts. Connecting the dots from San Francisco to Chicago to Philly to the UK and back again, the Just Listen record offers sounds spanning from classic boom bap to downtempo to future funk to dancefloor heat all wrapped together with feel good vibe and optimistic look on things to come. I hope you enjoy listening to this release as much as I enjoyed putting it together.” - Spinnerty

The Roots | Tunnel Vision re-fix a la Miles Bonny

With The Roots’ new album, How I Got Over, on replay worldwide this week it only seems appropriate that Kansas-City’s own soulful vocalist/producer/emcee Miles Bonny would get in on it.  Dood totally flipped this jawn, dropped some vocals and mixed it up for Roots fans and good music-liking folk everywhere.

Enjoy and say hello to Miles and peep the rest of the midwest’s INnateSounds Crew.

Thanks to Julian over at Melting Pot Music for putting us on :)

Tokyo Dawn | The Heart

The art of the compilation has been revived!  Easily one of the best comps we’ve heard this year.  This time from Germany-based Tokyo Dawn Records - a label that has been putting out quality since 1995.  We updated you back in April and since then TDR has been getting busy!

The latest, The Heart, compilation is an assemblage of very eclectic sounds selected and arranged in a consistent and soulful package.  From the the content of this release to the artwork and the way this promo was organized and delivered to us we’d give it an A+!

Check out the preview of a couple standout tracks and then peep the EPK.  Some amazing artists involved. Support.

Soundwaves | Minty Selections

A couple weeks ago I was invited as a guest to the Soundwaves radio show on KPFK FM in Los Angeles.  Little did I know the 12am-2am show was going to be some of the most fun I’ve had in months (aside from the Electric Wire Hustle show a few days before:) ).  The show’s creator, Abraham Beltran, and his lovely co-hosts Ms. Cecilia and DJ Seano a.k.a. The Lord of Lounge were absolutely wonderful hosts and really  down to earth music lovers.

The show started off with one of the most talented guitarists I’ve ever heard, 19-year old Kris Escajeda with a really nice acoustic set.  He brought along Ms. Eddicka Organista (El-Haru Kuroi) who sang a lovely lullaby.  They were amazing!  Really, truly talented.

The Soundwaves crew let me take over the spaceship for a bit where I was able to play some dope joints - some new, some old!  Towards the end of our journey Abraham interviewed Junior from Recordbreakin, delving into the past, present and future for the Philadelphia-based label.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience to share the airwaves with these amazingly talented and genuine people.  Check the technique from episode #101 and stay tuned every Saturday for Soundwaves on www.kpfk.org or 90.3FM in Los Angeles area. -J Marie

Miles Bonny | Prelude to Lumberjack Soul

We’ve been tracking, appreciating and loving to Kansas City’s own soulful vocalist Miles Bonny for several years now.  Finally got word of his debut album Lumberjack Soul dropping on Melting Pot Music which features productions from DJ Day, Suff Daddy, Hulk Hodn, Twit One, 74 Miles Away, Kova, Nicolas Kopernicus and appearances by AHU and Fleur Earth.  The album couldn’t have a more appropriate name as Miles’ voice is on some next level rustic-soul.  Beautiful.  Cannot wait for this album to drop!  Enjoy the preview of “Nothing But You” produced by Justin Krecker off the forthcoming album.
