Last year we met and interviewed the gang of Electric Wire Hustle at their first LA show. It was really such an amazing time and so nice to tie in all of their wonderful music to their real life laughter and gracious spirits.
In the past week 2 of the 3 members of New Zealand’s soulhop trio, Electric Wire Hustle have begun to release their own side projects!
The group’s vocalist, Mara TK, who regularly cooks up some super soul has unveiled his Taniwhunk EP which he wrote and produced at the Red Bull Music Studios in Auckland, New Zealand. The new tunes are on that laid-back, chill, percussive vibe with minimal yet beautifully layered vocals.
“Taniwhunk is a form of Maori music” A term coined in order to claim a small part of this vast musical universe for ourselves, lest we continually be labelled the borrower. The Maori of this generation exist in the most technologically advanced era yet. Thus we are afforded the potential to express our mana with ever-greater resources, definition and distribution.” - Mara TK
Dropping the single off his forthcoming album One today, Electric Wire Hustle’s drummer Myele Manzanza comes with some uptempo, funky goodness. The first single ‘Me I Know Him’ featuring Sam Manzanza and fellow Red Bull Music Academy participant Amenta started life with recording Sam’s vocals in Myele’s kitchen in Wellington on his inboard laptop microphone, while Amenta’s vocals were tracked at the high end recording facility of London’s Red Bull Studios.
“This rhythmical track touches on where I have come from, my African heritage, my history as a drummer and my love for jazz and dance music. Plus it’s dope to be able to finally put my dad on something too!” -Myele Manzanza
A slight but FANTASTIC update to our unofficial South-By-Southwest showcase - we’ve added one of our favorite groups in the history of ever, Electric Wire Hustle!
EWH, hailing all the way from new Zealand, has been been around sine 2007 and last year they came to tour the U.S. for the first time and we had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing them. Not only are they amazing artists with a super unique sound, but they are also hilarious and super sharp gentleman.
Along with EWH, we have some amazingly talented artists to showcase and to celebrate everything coming together so beautifully, Grown Kids Radio’s Brown Maj has curated and blended this mixtape to give you an idea of what to expect.
Enjoy, spread the love and come see us if you’ll be in Austin on March 14.
This week we lost one of the greatest in our hip hop history, Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch of the Beastie Boys. Adam was 1/3 of the Beastie Boys, songwriter, [film] director, father and husband. MCA and his contributions to this universe were infinite and we are thankful for the legacy he’s left behind.
To pay homage, Benny Tones (New Zealand), the guy behind all of the amazing sound that is Electric Wire Hustle, has put together a really dope re-edit of the Beastie’s classic, “Intergalactic”.
Fat Freddy’s Drop, the epic soul/dub/funk/jazz band hailing from New Zealand, is back!!! They are set to drop a new album, Blackbird, in early 2013 and have just released their single “Silver & Gold” for free download to get you excited. Worked for us - sold!
